Brief Introduction of 925 Silver and Maintenance Tips

A. What is anodic oxidation treatment

Anodic oxidation on silver jewelry — the so-called anodic oxidation treatment in the most direct way is to plate the jewelry with a very thin layer of white alumina. This is a very convenient option for those people who have no time for jewelry maintenance. This treatment is being used wildly on silver jewelry now.

B. Sterling silver jewelry

Silver is one of the precious metals, and is merely after gold among all the precious metals for the time being. Although the price of silver is not as high as the price of platinum or gold, its price is still far higher than the price of tin, lead or other metals. But silver is too soft and easily deformed, therefore, usually other metals are added to increase the hardness when it is used to make jewelry, and each country adds different alloys to it. As a matter of fact, according to the international standard, it is recognized as sterling silver as long as the silver content is over 92.5%.

C. What is 925 silver

Generally speaking, the sterling silver jewelry sold in the market is made of 925 silver instead of 999 sterling silver. 925 silver is a kind of alloy which combines 7.5% of other metals and 92.5% of silver, and it is internationally recognized as sterling silver. The jewelry made of 925 silver is stronger and more durable. 999 sterling silver is just as soft as pure gold, which makes it too soft to be used to make jewelry. Compared with the jewelry made of 999 sterling silver, the jewelry made of 925 silver can keep its shape and does not deforms easily, at the same time, the surface of the jewelry will not wear too much or need constant polishing.

D. How to maintain sterling silver jewelry

The biggest reason that leads silver oxidation is the oxygen in the air, so the best way of maintenance is to use air barrier, for example, silver jewelry should be put in a sealed plastic bag and then into the jewelry box, blocking air contact with the silver. When silver jewelry is oxidized, silver polishing dip (SP dip) or silver polishing cloth (SP cloth) can be used to polish the jewelry. But SP dip is too strong, so SP cloth should be used as long as possible before using SP dip. When SP dip is needed to be used to polish silver jewelry, the jewelry should be washed with water and rubbed thoroughly immediately after being polished with SP dip so as to wipe away all the chemicals on the surface, and then the jewelry should be dried with a hair dryer or else the oxygen in the air will speed up the silver oxidation.
